Soon To be on TV

Well it has been a little while since I have last blogged but I have been busy working at children’s parties, corporate events and weddings. At a recent wedding I was filmed performing which is due to be shown on Sky TV’s ‘Four weddings’ programme in the near future. I am unsure of the date it will be shown, but keep your eyes out for it. It was in Halifax!

New Home

Well I have finally moved house. I am still in Nottingham but I am more accessible and can even be used as a last minute ‘emergency magician’.
So my new house, I get a magic room/study to myself and my wife gets a walk in wardrobe and a balcony so it was a great compromise!!

Travelling Around

So, many people ask if I travel a lot doing my magic and do I like it?
Well although I don’t mind the travelling I am fortunate enough to perform for great people at great events, be it Childrens Parties, weddings, Corporate functions, they all have there own challenges but are a lot of fun.
This last month alone I have worked in Nottingham, Derby, King Lynn, London, Leek, Chesterfield and Manchester.

Time for a Holiday

With wedding season nearly over and with a slight break in my bookings I decided to take a short break to the city of Edinburgh which is to be highly recommended. The culture and architecture as well as the history is definitely a huge appeal.
Upon my return I had a children’s party and another wedding to perform at, this time at Strelley Hall in Nottingham.
At this point I am still taking booking for wedding fro next year and if anyone requires that special sort of entertainment, please get in touch and I will see what I can do.

DVT

Well I haven’t blogged for a while but recently I have met with a truly inspirational, highly intelligent human being. I taught him magic and he enlightened me with various interesting facts that I have never even thought of.
Yesterdays conversation I was alerted to the sheer fact that Deep Vein Thrombosis is the biggest risk when in hospital, more that anything else and it is rarely mentioned and extremely easy to avoid.
Today top tip if ever in hospital ‘wiggle your toes’

Do you recognise this dog breed?

Well it has been a while since I last blogged and lots has happened including the passing of my wifes family dog 'poppy' who had been in the family 14 or so years.

Needless to say but Poppy will be missed terribly and it has brought to the front the question of what she was a cross breed of. Very little is known and if anyone can help in any way it would be much appreciated. Here is the photo.

Peter Kay - The tour that doesn’t tour - Tour REVIEW

Well it is 7 years since Peter Kay did his infamous tour which launched him into stardom so I had high expectations for this one.
We arrived at Manchester with support act ledgend Rick Ashley. Oh dear, I never liked this guy and still don’t think he has great talent but everyone went bezerk with 'never gonna let you go'. Personally I would have prefered to sit in silence.
So in came Peter Kay and did two solid 40 minute halves of observational comedy finishing off with playing a spade on stage. Although quite funny, peter looked tired. Overall this was good but no where near as good as previous tours but still worth a look.

Wedding Season

Wedding Season - So we are fast approaching wedding season and I am getting many enquiries for summer weddings and parties.
There are still gaps and it is not too late. So book now. I travel all over the UK and it doesn’t matter how big or small the event. I will be at a wedding fayre on Sunday the 23rd May at the Nottingham Forest Football club if anyone wanted to come down to see me showing off my skills. Here are the stats from a leading bridal magazine.

72% of all brides say they would have spent more time choosing their reception entertainment
Almost 100% said they would have spent more of their budget on the entertainment
78% of brides say they would have made the entertainment their highest priority
81% of guests say the thing they remember the most about a reception is the entertainment

How to Train your Dragon 3d

Well went to see this animation which was made by the same makers of Shrek and was very pleasantly surprised.
It was humorous had a little emotional content and the animation was great. Throughly recommended. 8/10.

Alice in Wonderland Review

Ok so I decided to put the 3D glasses on and watch Alice in Wonderland. I was quite looking forward to it after reading the book as a child and I am a fan of mixing animation with reality.
However, I was very disappointed. The story was no where near as magical as I remembered and Johnny Depp as the mad hatter was not a great appointment.
I was hoping for magic and excitement and lots of humour but got none from a very poor film.
The Walt disney 1951 film is a LOT better

Shoot Ogawa

Ok this weekend was the annual trip to the Blackpool magic convention.
There was various high and low lights with the acts and performers.
By far the best lecture and performance was by Shoot Ogawa.
The lecture although late at night was heavily attended and Shoot demonstrated some super direct super clean magic with cards and coins.
What makes Shoots material super strong is the visual straight forwardness in the approach. During the lecture Shoot also demonstrated some old techniques like the Olram move, but it was super clean and a bit of a magician fooler.
Also Shoot also demonstrated a new ring move which was so cheeky as it was linking two rings while a spectator was holding one only to be examined.
Also Shoot has a very likeable character with a very charismatic sense of humour. This lecture alone was worth the price of admission as it was a great lesson in skill and timing.
Shoots horseshoe performance was nothing short of excellent. Performing coin effects followed by a vanished ring in card effect. Without giving too much away, using the muscle pass so effortlessly to vanish and transfer a coin is a thing of beauty (when Shoot does it)
Funnily enough in the Horseshoe third session shoot changed his act slightly and included a great little effect where he produced live goldfish in a glass. I have no clue why he changed his act but hey it was great to see.

Vegas show Reviews

Well it has been ages since I last blogged as I have just got married and come back from my honeymoon. I had a great time in San Francisco and Las Vegas.
Whilst is Vegas fortunately we got to see stacks of great and not so great shows so here is my reviews which I hope will be of some use. I have given scores out of 10 on both mine and my wifes opinion which was the almost the same.

“O” – Cirque de Soleil – Bellagio This is the top cirque show so had a LOT to live up to. Personally I couldn’t follow the story but the spectacle was truly amazing and definitely worth it. 7.5/10

Ka – Cirque de Soleil – MGM – This also was really great and was not much to chose between this and ‘O’. However if you are a newcomer to the cirque de soleil productions I would just watch one of them. 7/10

Terry Fator – Mirage - Incase you don’t know, this guy was the winner of Americas got talent and is a ventriloquist and does great impressions, oh and is an awesome singer and quite frankly is far too talented by my liking.
This was definitely one of the best shows in Vegas and well worth the money and thoroughly entertaining. Personally Terry was not quite as good as the ventriloquist (Kimmo) that I had at my wedding, but was still awesome. 8/10

David Copperfield - MGM – Well I have seen a lot of Copperfield’s footage over the years so was sort of knew what to expect, but how wrong was I. David Copperfield presented a greatly scripted and hugely magical show, switching between close up and stage illusions.
Did any effects fool me? No, But his magic was pure beauty and for me was the BEST SHOW IN VEGAS. 9/10

Lance Burton - Monte Carlo – I was very much looking forward to this act especially seeing his Dove act, however both me and my wife were sadly disappointed. Lance performed a poor imitation of his dove act, followed by very disjointed effects with no continuity and was very wooden. The crowd after from what I heard what not that impressed either!
The highlight was his appearance from the chandelier but the rest was very mediocre for such a great. 5.5/10

Mac King - Harrahs – Well we got a super discount and paid $10/£6.20 to see his show which included a free drink. This show was great value and a really funny show and the crowd loved it. 100% recommended and after the show Mac took time to meet the guests and he came across as a genuinely good guy. Bravo 8/10

Nathan Burton – Flamingo – Well from seeing the odd clip of this guy on the net etc over the years I was quite exited and the ticket price included a free buffet. What could go wrong. This show was VERY POOR and not worth seeing. The total act lasted 1hr which included a 20 min comedy act by someone else. The effects performed were very standard and without being nasty were not routined particarly well. What mainly disappointed me was the lack of professionalism. One trick messed up, one forgot part of the illusion so had to run to the side, the stage manager (his sister) had a face like a smacked arse and the seating positions were just ridiculous. To top in off, the buffet was rubbish also. 3/10

Avatar

Well been working hard with lots of magic shows but I did get time to watch this film Avatar. I am a big fan of animation and this lived up to expectation. In 3d it was awesome and was a good 2 and a half hour epic switching from amination to regular. Throughly recommended.
